Water Recycling Systems

Water recycling systems provide a great way of managing waste water or grey water, storm water and rainwater. These systems are designed to conserve the natural resources. The idea is to utilize the water that would otherwise go as waste for jobs that actually do not require fresh potable drinking water from the mains supply. Rainwater and recycled grey water (collected from household wastes) can be used for the purpose of irrigation, flushing of toilets etc.

The waste water collected from household is of two types. The waste water collected from the toilets is known as black water. It cannot be recycled and reused. The grey water or wash water is collected from all sources excluding the toilets and can be recycled and used for jobs that do not require fresh water. The reason why black water cannot be recycled is because the major component of black water is nitrogen. Since Nitrogen is the most unwanted water pollutant, the black water cannot be recycled. The grey water can be recycled but it can still not be used for drinking purposes, this is because the contamination level of grey water is very high and no matter how well it is treated it is near to impossible to eliminate all the pollutants from the water. Recycled grey water can be used for the purpose of irrigation, flushing toilets etc.

Grey water is the waste water that is collected from the sinks, laundry and showers. Around 80% of the waste water collected from the household comprises of grey water. Recycled grey water is considered good for irrigation. It has been observed that if grey water is recycled properly and used for irrigation then plants respond very well to the recycled water. If the plants respond well to the recycle water then there is no need to use potable drinking water for the purpose of irrigation. Water in huge volumes can be saved annually by substituting, mains water supply by other safe options. Recycled grey water is often used for top soil treatment.

Rainwater harvesting systems are used to collect and use rainwater. The rainwater that is collected can be used for irrigation, flushing toilets, refilling swimming pools, washing cars etc. The rainwater that would otherwise go as waste can be collected with the help of large collection surface such as the rooftop and then stored in huge storage tanks. The stored water is then used when there is shortage of supply during the dry spell.

Recycling systems may or may not incorporate purification method; it all depends on the purpose for which it will be used.
