Rainwater Collection CisternRain water collection cistern is a huge body (something like a tank or an underground basin of water) used to collect and store rainwater. History calls cisterns to be underground structures and that were water providers for an entire village (big area).Cisterns provided for irrigation, hygiene and potable water. They followed the eco friendly way of storing water, causing no harm to Mother Nature.
In today’s world people have to face a lot of problem due to limited space especially in urban areas where the population is more. In residential areas, with the unique limited space, cisterns have travelled from underground structures to above ground or roof top. The design and materials used vary with the use and capacity. Concrete, plastic, cement and steel are the most commonly used materials for cistern construction. Commercial grade polythene inhibited with UV8, restricts mold and algae and sustains healthy storage of water.
The cistern walls for irrigation need to be high and of larger capacity, since it has to cater for summer and a larger area. Domestic cisterns are generally small and concealed. Water for potable needs have to be filtered, kept extremely clean and the building material should not contain asbestoses. The cistern’s interiors should be regularly cleaned, maintained and the water chlorine treated. It should be water tight and water proof materials should seal the joints for security. It should be always covered to avoid mishaps.
The above ground cisterns should be kept in basement/ crawl spaces, garages, sheds, sun barriers etc with a strong concrete support to hold the heaviness, even in very full conditions. The periodic checking for cracks and debris and entry of animals and vermin will support a healthy living.
The underground cistern should be installed carefully. It should have manhole or risers of 24 inches, in which the 8 inches extended as above ground opening. Installation and casting should be done perfectly as per manufacturer and must be protected from direct sunlight, insects and trees.
To dissipate the incoming pressure, concrete blocks around the pipe should be used and baffles in case of fiber glass cisterns. Rejecting the first rain water is the perfect strategy to avoid high level of contaminants in cistern. Cistern should be equipped with an overflow device.
The types of underground cisterns available are concrete plate, brick and lime cistern. Wire mesh and plastic cistern are all for above the ground installation etc. The main discipline of cistern demand is parsimony and cleanliness and respect with water.
