Grey Water Tanks

Grey water tanks are used to hold the non-toilet waste water. Generally such tanks are required in grey water recycling systems to collect the waste water before it is sent for recycling. Grey water tanks are also used in RVs to collect waste water.

The set up of a grey water recycling system is quite simple. It consists of a holding tank, the grey water from different sections of the house flow towards the tank through the plumbing pipes. The holding tank is controlled by an intelligent system. Since grey water is highly contaminated, storing it for long can cause bad odor and can even lead to severe health hazards. It is therefore necessary that either the water should be should be dumped or sent for recycling. Ideally if the grey water is not sent for recycling within 24 hours it should be dumped. In the grey water recycling system the tank is controlled by a timer. If the pump is not activated and the grey water is not sent for recycling within the define time frame then the holding tank is emptied.

Recycled grey water can be used for almost all jobs that do not require potable drinking water. It can be used for irrigation, flushing toilets etc. Australia is known to be the driest continent on planet earth. By encouraging people to install grey water recycling systems at home it can save millions of tons of water annually. The grey water tanks can be installed above or below the ground. The advanced grey water recycling systems come with inbuilt tanks. By recycling and reusing grey water for tasks that actually do not require much of drinking water one can significantly contribute towards water conservation.

Since grey water tanks or grey water recycling systems have to deal with waste water that is highly contaminated you must consult a professional plumber before installing any of these. It is also important to get the approval from the local council before installing a recycling system at home. The installation of the grey water tank should be as per the defined rules and regulations. These rules and regulations have been defined keeping the health and safety factors in mind and so it is very important that the tanks should be installed only by a licensed plumber.

Grey water holding tanks are also used in RVs. Earlier only one tank was used for collecting grey water and black water but nowadays RVs have separate tanks for grey water and black water. The wastes from the kitchen sinks and shower bath are moved on to towards the grey water tank with the help of pumping mechanism. After the grey water is dumped it is very important to clean the tank properly.
